What's with backseat drivers?
This song titled "Backseat" played during my Spotify session this morning with a line in the chorus that goes: Don't wanna hear them no more/Way from the backseat/(driving from the backseat).
How often does this happen to us? Those voices from the way back lean forward and tell you everything you don't need to hear in that moment. And how often do we listen to them?
We’ve been taught that our intelligence comes from our minds, that our thoughts are boss. But what we need to remember is, true wisdom is held in our bodies. When we feel things — constriction, emptiness, buzzing, heaviness — we need to give them space to speak to us. But our minds immediately step in to tell us why they’re there, to help us make sense of it all, to help us feel organized in a messy world. Unfortunately, those thoughts are often old stories we associate with those physical sensations from not so great things that happened in the past, and thus we have those backseat drivers.
So next time the voices lean forward again, lean ever closer to the physical sensation and say, “Hey, I’m with you. Right now is not then. We don’t need to make sense of anything. We can just be.”
