This Is Girl: Margaret
11 year old Margaret’s mom tells me, “I love how tough she is. And she’s a mother hen. When she was little, she’d take off her own sweater and give it to someone who was cold. She has no problem calling out bullies. She’s thoughtful, inquisitive, and has a quirky sense of humor. My favorite thing about her is that she LOVES trying new things. And my second favorite thing is that she’s a great roller coaster buddy.”
When all the girls walked in, I asked them to sit down and write their favorite things about themselves down on a piece of paper. As Margaret is writing hers, her mom laughs and says, “Humor and memes? How is that a favorite thing about yourself?” Margaret, without a missing a beat says, “Because I’m a meme!” Her mom says, “How are you a meme?!” Margaret says, “Because I’m funny!” Such was the tone for the remainder of Margaret’s session. :)
K: Tell me about your outfit? Why are you dressed like this today?
M: I think that I should express what I like: humor, music, soccer.
K: What makes you YOU? How are you unique?
M: My humor and smarts.
K: What makes you happy?
M: Hanging out with friends and in general, being, well…ME.
K: What makes you sad?
M: Being thought of as LESS just because I’m girl.
K: Who is your favorite person right now?
M: My bffs, family, and teachers.
K: What’s your favorite thing about yourself?
M: Humor and memes.
K: What are your dreams?
M: To one day live in a world without mean boys.
K: What does being a girl mean to you?
M: Being a girl means being important, amazing, and unique.
