What is somatic work?

I get this question a lot: What is somatic work?

First, somatics is work related to the body, becoming embodied, marrying mind & body.

Second, it isn't work (though some days it's challenging)... it's more like a remembering, a sometimes a returning to our organic nature outside of societal norms & expectations.

Somatic work is:

  • noticing what arises in you when you sit in silence, move your body, breathe, make sounds, & be in relationships

  • feeling your body & your emotions without judgements/intellectualizing

  • being with the present moment instead of stuck in the past or the stories we tell ourselves about what's happened/is happening

  • the opposite of what modern society expects: softening vs "manning up", resting vs overworking, pleasure & sensuality vs rigidity & shame, humanity & humility vs performance & ego, valuing intuition vs only valuing logic, our bodies as a living organism vs the body as an object

Lastly, because it's important to note, this "work" has been here long before it was considered a healing modality. Everything I mentioned is rooted in Indigenous cultures who seem to have never forgotten how sacred human life is & how important & intelligent our vessel is.

There is so much to this that I will continue sharing. As for my why & how, that'll be another post, but please know I'm here for conversations & questions.
